Primal Arena
A 3-mile wide crater of scorched and cracked earth. Each day at noon, the frost salamander Mellethao the Vicious (HD 12, AC as Plate, Damage as Claw x2. Immune to cold and mundane damage. All creatures within 20' suffer Damage as cold each round) faces the lionine fire elemental Nesmonno the Treacherous (HD 12, AC as Plate, Damage as Giant Bite. Immune to fire and mundane damage. Fire breath 3/day, 90'x30' cone) in a vicious battle until one of them yields, at which point they retreat to their lairs to lick their wounds and prepare for their next fight. The results of the fight change the weather in the surrounding region, if Nesmondo scores a marginal victory, the weather will be clear and sunny, if he soundly beats Mellethao, the next day will bring an unbearable scorching heat.
Mellethao's lair is a castle of icy spires nestled between the peaks of three mountains to the north. She sleeps in a pool of hypercooled water and has a guard of 13 white apes (HD 4, AC as Chainmail, Damage as Fist x2). A hoard of 50 sapphires worth 1000sp each are frozen into the ceiling of her chamber. She wears an amulet of treasure finding (as the potion, 1/day), as a circlet.
Nesmonno lairs in a cave to the west whose floor is covered in caustic muddy hot springs. He sleeps atop a crack that radiates volcanic heat, and is guarded by 21 fire bats (HD 3, AC as Chainmail, Damage as Bite. Immune to fire). A bundle of 3 ruby javelins worth 4000sp each and a suit of plate armour +2 of detect evil (as the spell, 1/day) are half submerged in one of the pools, Nesmonno used to take the form of a man, but since he adopted his new bestial form, he hasn't needed these trappings.
If Mellethao dies, the local climate becomes a sun-parched desert. If Nesmonno dies, it will become a blizzard blighted tundra. In either case the affected area will spread at a rate of 1 mile per week.
If both creatures are slain, the weather falls back into natural cycles.
